About Me

First Things First

When you move into your first house, you might be tempted to order new furniture or carpets for your place instead of attending to more important matters. Unfortunately, if you overlook home security, you might be left wondering if your family is safe while you are away. As a lock enthusiast, I always tell new homeowners that the first thing they should do is to rekey their entire house. Believe it or not, the process is relatively inexpensive and easy, so you won't have to worry about breaking the bank to protect your new investment. Read my website to find out more.

Moving To A New Home? 3 Things You Should Do Before You Move In

by Katie Davis

It is always exciting moving to a new home, but with everything you have to do, it can be overwhelming. During all the chaos of getting everything moved, there are tasks you need to do before you and your family move in that you may have overlooked. Follow the tips below, and you and your family will be safe and happy in your new home.

Find the Circuit Breaker Box

Determine where the circuit box breaker is in the home just in case you need to turn the power off for some reason. For example, if you have a wiring problem in your bathroom, you should turn the power off to that room before you fix it so you do not electrocute yourself. The circuit breaker box is usually made out of metal and is flush with the wall. You may find it in a garage, or it may be just inside or outside your front door.

Once you find the breaker box, open it up and you will see several switches. Each switch controls the power to a certain room. For example, you should see a label marked kitchen next to the switch that controls the power to that room. There is one larger switch at the top that controls the power to the entire home.  If these are not labeled, hire an electrician to help you determine which switch belongs to each part of the house.

Find the Main Water Valve

There may be times when you need to shut the water off to your entire home, such as if there is a burst pipe in your bathroom.  To do this, you need to find the main water valve. This may be in a basement near a front foundation wall. The valve may be located inside your home, such as under your kitchen sink or near a water heater. If you are unsure where it is, contact a plumber to help you.

Call a Locksmith

Contact a local locksmith from a company like Arapahoe County Security Center Inc to schedule a security assessment of your new home. You need to have all locks changed or have the locks rekeyed. The locksmith may check the locks on the windows to ensure they work properly.  They can make other suggestions of things you should do to make your new home more secure. For example, if the home does not have a security system, this would be a good time to have one installed.

Now that you are properly prepared, you and your family can enjoy your new home.
